A TRIBUTE TO
OUR HISTORY

The beautiful and rugged Gibbston Valley was first planted with grapes in the early 1980s, pioneering the Central Otago wine industry in an area famous for gold only a century earlier. In 1994, our Shanagolden Block was first planted in Chardonnay.

The Shanagolden Block was farmed by two families who worked side by side, right from their first arrival in 1876 to the Gibbston Valley. The Enrights from Ireland, and the Leslie family from Scotland, endured the great hardships of the Gold Rush era together and eventually intermarried.

Their oldest son James was the first of nine children and possessed all the tenacity of a son raised in such a harsh environment.

His nickname was 'The Drummer.'

Our award winning Central Otago Pinot Noir is named in tribute to this local legend, on whose family land our original vineyards were planted. It's our way of saying thanks, and remembering that family is what's most important to us.

Here's to the Drummer, a name shared by two Central Otago legends (even if one is a wine!).

DRUMMER

- Central Otago Pinot Noir -
Pinot Noir Grapes - photo by Maja Petric
With its deep colour, robust character and weight in the mid-palate, this Central Otago Pinot Noir is no shrinking violet.

NO SHRINKING VIOLET

From our family stable of award-winning wines, Waitiri Creek proudly bring you the Drummer, a truly special Pinot Noir.

Very attractive bouquet with aromas of red berries and stony schist soils, wild dried herb and a fine savoury core. On the palate - youthful, fresh and vibrant with an abundance of texture, core of fruit, moderate oak level and plenty of youthful vibrato. Flavours reflect the bouquet with dark cherry and dried raspberry, some plum then a return to the savoury core. Firm tannins and moderate oak level add foundation and texture. Lengthy finish and well made. Best drinking from mid to late 2022 and through 2030. - Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
